Reiki as Biofield Therapy

Reiki, along with Therapeutic Touch, Medical Qigong, and several others, falls under energy medicine or biofield therapies. Although biofield therapies have existed in all cultures for thousands of years, empirical research on the effectiveness of biofield therapies is still relatively limited. It is limited by research funding or finding a publisher when it is completed. Several universities in the USA and worldwide researched biofield therapies' effectiveness in the last twenty years. Reiki practitioners have become a favorite subject for biofield researchers. Hundreds of double-blind studies on the efficacy of Reiki were published. These studies were conducted on human subjects, animals, and even cells in Petri dishes. These studies' results are mindboggling and open doors to many clinical applications. Several organizations are compiling a list of these studies, like Consciousness and Healing Initiative (CHI) or IONS (Institute of Noetic Sciences).
For the last two hundred years, we have viewed our body as a bio-mechanical entity. From this perspective, we have tried to understand how our bodies heal from physical trauma or injury. We focused on the body's mechanics and chemical reactions inside the body. Now, we are beginning to understand the bioenergetic field of humans. We are beginning to recognize the role of this energy movement in the healing process, not only for physical trauma but also for mental or emotional injuries.
What ancient healers called aura nowadays called the electromagnetic field of the body. What ancient sages called oneness, modern physics calls nonlocal or entanglement. With new developments and discoveries in science, what was once esoteric, mystical, and rejected by the establishment has now become an accepted part of the practice. We can measure the electromagnetic field of the human heart or brain waves or register light (biophotons) admitted by the human body. These subtle energies power all body functions and carry information. It is how Beverly Rubik describes the biofield in her 2002 paper The Biofield Hypothesis: Its Biophysical Basis and Role in Medicine: "… the complex, extremely weak electromagnetic field of the organism hypothesized to involve electromagnetic bioinformation for regulating homeodynamics. The biofield is a useful construct consistent with bioelectromagnetics and the physics of nonlinear, dynamical, nonequilibrium living systems. It offers a unifying hypothesis to explain the interaction of objects or fields with the organism and is especially useful toward understanding the scientific basis of energy medicine, including acupuncture, biofield therapies, bioelectromagnetic fields comprising the biofield as well as its holistic properties may account for the rapid, holistic effects of certain alternative and complementary medical interventions."
As Reiki practitioners, we learn to work with this field of energy and information. It is why our practice is part of energy medicine. When our hearts and minds are coherent and overflow with love and compassion, we make a difference. We open ourselves to these energies and guide them to the subject or object. In our interaction with the recipient, we do not manipulate his energy field in any way; we bring balance and restore harmony in this field. We bring an energy that empowers the body's self-healing abilities. In the beginning, we learn how to sense the energy in the body, but with practice and self-development, we can also read the information. We could tap into our client's inner wisdom to assist the body in healing. In Reiki I, we learn how to work with energy centers. As we progress on our Reiki journey, we learn how to address the whole biofield. Study, practice, and meditation improve our connection with our inner wisdom and source. By realizing our oneness with the source and embracing our inner wisdom from the place of love, we become better practitioners.
Reiki has become a major part of Integrative Medicine. It became a part of the treatment protocol in many hospitals worldwide. Reiki is offered in Children's hospitals, Hospital Emergency Rooms, Pre-Op, Operating rooms, Post-Op, Oncology, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, and Palliative Care. Hospital administration and insurance providers see undeniable benefits of Reiki in medical facilities.
Reiki has become a vital part of the new holistic approach in medicine, a system that treats humans as a whole. A system that sees the body as an electromagnetic field that regulates all functions of the body and is connected to everything in our environment. Reiki has become one of the links that bridge science and spirituality.
